What Happens In Therapy

A Gentle Introduction For Anyone Who Is Curious

Starting therapy can feel like a big step—and if you’ve never been before, you might be wondering what actually happens in a session.
Movies and TV often show therapy as one-sided advice-giving or endless questions about your childhood. In reality, therapy is a much more collaborative, supportive, and human experience.

Here’s what you can generally expect when you begin therapy:

1. A Safe Space to Be Yourself

At its core, therapy is about creating a space where you can feel heard, accepted, and supported—without judgment. It’s a place to bring your full self, whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, unsure, stuck, or just curious about what’s going on inside.

You don’t need to have the “right” words or know exactly what you want to say. We figure that out together.

2. Getting to Know You

In the first few sessions, we’ll spend time getting to know each other. I’ll ask questions about what’s bringing you in, what you’re hoping for, and what life looks like for you right now. You can share as much or as little as you’re comfortable with.

We’ll also talk a bit about how I work and what you can expect moving forward.

3. Setting Goals—Big or Small

Therapy doesn’t have to start with a big, life-changing goal. Sometimes the goal is simply to feel a little less anxious, understand your emotions better, or find new ways of coping with stress.

Together, we’ll clarify what you’d like to get out of the process—and adjust as we go.

4. Conversation, Reflection, and Insight

A lot of therapy looks like conversation. But it’s not just talking—it’s a process of slowing down, noticing patterns, exploring emotions, and sometimes making connections between your past and present.

You might leave a session with new insights or tools. Other times, it might just feel good to be listened to. Both are valuable.

5. Consistency and Progress Over Time

Therapy is a process. You don’t need to “have it all together” or expect instant change. Over time, you may start to notice shifts—in how you relate to yourself, how you handle challenges, or how you connect with others.

There’s no one-size-fits-all path. Your process is your own.

Final Thoughts

Therapy is about showing up as you are. It’s not about being fixed—it’s about being met. My role is to walk beside you, to listen deeply, and to support your growth in a way that feels authentic and meaningful.

If you’re wondering whether therapy might be right for you, I’d be glad to talk.
